Please meet Mohammed Junaid, he is a Model, Actor and Director in Toronto and represented by KG Talent. Check out our Q & A below:
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
I was the only child of my parents and had no siblings my parents wanted me to pursue a normal career. I remember my mom used to say that one day my son would work for a multinational company. In my whole family no one ever pursued acting. As a child I knew I wanted to do something great. It was later that I found out that the happiest I have ever been is when I am on set performing I just love it. I grew up watching movies, which stared Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Arnold Schwarzenegger. I always knew I wanted to do what they did its just that the older I have become this dream has become more stronger.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
One day I saw a documentary about Arnold Schwarzenegger how he moved to America and became the biggest star of his time defying all odds how he was huge and even had a thick accent, how many Agents and Managers though it couldn’t be done. I told myself I have always had a similar dream so what do I have to lose I can’t lose this dream I have just found my real purpose and passion in life. I want to inspire others to achieve greatness to defy odds and to make this world a better place. I hope to inspire others into believing that no matter where you come from you can make this world a better place.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
I believe when I landed my first Agent and he started sending me out for auditions it was during that time I didn’t knew other actors who could help me with self tapes or even practice my lines before an audition. I also struggled between jobs trying to find something flexible enough which allows me to make my days available for auditions. I suffered financially for a bit but then I was able to get through it just like everything else. With time my connections grew and I was able to utilize different areas of making money within the entertainment industry I do modeling, commercials and brand ambassador work as well. I designed a life that allows me to keep my days open for auditions and make decent money on the side. I guess one of my rewarding experiences would have to be when I got an Actor role on Suits.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
I would like to play characters from Marvel franchises I have always been inspired by super heroes and how they save our world from terror. I love Iron man, Batman, Spiderman, and Captain America. I do also like dark characters like Joker (Batman) and Loki (Thor)

What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I currently work in Toronto and I am represented by KG Talent, however I have travelled to NYC and have had few meeting with agencies. I am also looking to get representation in Los Angeles in the near future so that I can apply for an 0-1 visa which is for actors who are willing to work in the US market. I also do modelling, commercials and have started shooting my own projects so directing is another area I would like to capitalize in. As a model I have been punished in several magazines here in Canada and have a modeling agent as well.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
I believe the first and the most important thing is you have to love it. Theirs a lot of opportunity here in this city, network with follow actors, try to add your self to different casting sites I always recommend eBoss Canada, Casting Workbook and Actors Access. Get head shots from photographers land independent films and submit your self to agencies. Think of yourself as the CEO of your own business and be open to making some investments in areas such as quality head shots, casting website registrations and acting classes. Always have a long-lasting career goal in mind and remember you only lose when you give up.
Why, What fuels your passion?
Performing can be very powerful. Although it can be for entertainment and comedy, it can also be used to inspire people. When I watch inspirational movies, I love how there can be a message which you can gain from that can make you stop to reevaluate yourself or benefit you. For instance, when I watched the Pursuit of Happiness, Will Smith’s character struggled to get where he wanted. Even though it wasn’t a huge difference at the end of the movie, the audience knew things would get easier and he would eventually get to his goal. Through the struggle, he didn’t stop but persevered. I can use this in my own life as I know acting is not easy and there will be a lot of challenges along the way but I just need to keep on being determined and dedicated and I will eventually reach my goal.
What is something about you that most people would never guess
I am afraid of cats, I find it hilarious
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
Yes, without a doubt. I would do it all over again. I have been very blessed to do what I love. Perusing acting is the best decision I have ever made. I enjoy all my successes and Failures. I know that I have a goal to accomplish and everyday I am working towards it. I would like to quote Steve Jobs “Your time is limited so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by Dogma, which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your ear and intuition.”

Meet Actress Janice MacGregor, we had an opportunity to chat to her recently about her acting career. Check out the Q & A below!
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
As a child acting never crossed my mind. I was incredibly shy and I have traditional parents who pushed me towards a more conventional line of work. They wanted me to be a doctor.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
I got in to acting in my early-20s. I didn’t really have an particular inspirations at the time. Nowadays, I admire Danny Glover who had epilepsy yet persisted on in his acting career.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
Being open about having epilepsy is something that is a double edged sword. I like that I can be a voice for epilepsy but it frustrates me when I hear someone assume that I can’t play a role because I have epilepsy. I’m capable and physically fit and people should ask me what my limitations are rather than basing their judgement of me on an episode of ER they watched 20 years ago. Here’s the gist of it: Epilepsy can’t stop me from filming any sort of scene unless the scene requires me to drive. Other than that I don’t have any restrictions. And my seizures are under control with medication so I’m not a potential liability to a project… Something I found rewarding was being allowed to audition for The Grudge reboot. I love that genre! I didn’t get the role but it was an honour to be allowed the opportunity to audition.\What is your favourite type of character to play?… I enjoy characters where I am not typecast. I like playing roles that are not the “traditional Indian woman” character.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I presently work in the Saskatchewan market BUT I’M OPEN TO RELOCATING FOR A PROJECT!!! I would love to work in Toronto, Vancouver or Atlanta. I’d be happy to work anywhere there is work!
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
Do this for you. Don’t do this to get famous. Acting for the sake of fame or money is a crime against the art of storytelling. Learn from other artists but don’t compare yourself to others. And don’t rely on being beautiful or handsome to get by in the industry. There is always going to be someone who is better looking than you so focus on being the best artist you can be.
Why, What fuels your passion?
I have a deep love for storytelling through the arts. Playing different characters, bringing them to life, and creating a story behind them is a great creative outlet.
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
I’m about 4″ shorter than people think I am! And I collect garden gnomes.
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
I would do it all the same. Regrets are lessons in disguise so I try to focus on learning and moving forward rather than harping on what I could have done differently. I can’t go back in time so I don’t waste time wishing I had done something differently. I’m proud of every role I have ever played. I’m proud of certain auditions and callbacks even if I ultimately did not end up getting the role.

Matt Palmer is an actor based out of Toronto and has a few exciting projects on the go! We had a chance to chat with Matt recently. Take a look!
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
Haha, no not all! I always loved tv and movies, but the thought of actually doing it myself never even popped into my mind. It wasn’t till much later, actually about two years ago that I finally gave it a shot. I was lucky enough to work with some great people right away, and I was hooked!
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
Well at first I wouldn’t say anyone inspired me to pursue acting, but I have definitely had many people inspire me since I started. I’ve been fortunate to work with some really talented actors, directors and crews. Getting positive feedback from people you look up to is always a confidence booster.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
The biggest challenge for me is always scheduling. Having a full-time career outside of the business makes it hard to be available all the time. Unfortunately I’ve had to turn down a few things that I really wanted to do. My most rewarding experience? Anytime I get to act is reward enough for me lol! There is such a high level of talent around, I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
I love playing a historical character! I like researching the person , and trying to figure out who they were and what their life might have been like. Then taking all that and hopefully bringing it to life for everyone.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
Mostly tv and film so far, but going forward I’d like to focus more on film. Maybe explore some theatre in the future? Who knows, that’s one of the most exciting things about this business, you never know what you’ll be doing next!
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
To just go out and try it! Go out to auditions, keep learning your craft. Don’t get too caught up in having the right look, or the right headshot or all the other things that new actors are told you “MUST” have. That can all come later. The first network TV show I booked, I used a picture of me from a dinner party that I cropped into a headshot lol!
Why , What fuels your passion?
I love that every role is a totally different experience. You get to be a different person in a different place, tell a different story and (my personal favourite) maybe get to be in a different time period!
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
That as much as I love acting, I don’t like seeing myself on-screen! I hardly ever watch anything that I’ve done.
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
The only thing I would change is I would have started earlier. I missed all the “action star” years , I started in the “dad” years LOL. But all kidding aside, I couldn’t be happier with how things have gone so far. Two years ago I wouldn’t of thought I would be doing an interview for Eboss. Thanks again Darlene!

Please meet Actor Alex Kotsyk, he is an actor and producer who works in Toronto. We had a chance to catch up to discuss his acting career.
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
I never wanted to be an actor, it just happened…I mean its sounds like something unreal but I am a guy from a small town in Ukraine called Chernivtsi, something like Regina, SK. Acting wasn’t something that was widely offered and I can’t even recall classes that you could go to and study. I guess it was always inside waiting for the moment and not until I came to Canada seven years ago I had an opportunity to engage with my creative side. You know Canada and Ukraine its a bit different because where I am from, we first think about money and security because you can’t predict whats going to happen tomorrow and after all the hustle there is not much energy left to be creative. While in Canada, I feel like we are more secure in our future and government can back us up. I mean, I might be wrong about this but that’s the image I have.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
I am a huge Broadway fan and it all started from random visit of Broadway production Fiddler on the Roof in NYC with my Ukrainian friends. When I saw that and just realized there is nothing else I want to do but work my butt off to be like them. And I mean, just imagine how much work being put by every member of the team, not just in theater but film, tv, actors and crew spend countless hours learn practice and then sometimes even volunteer for experience. I have so much respect for industry people. So when I see a high quality production, it’s like a bell for me that says: “Alex, are you still doing your best and you like them, are you putting all your efforts?” so yeah this keeps me inspired and creative.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
Haha where do I start. So when I came to Canada my English wasn’t very good. And I would come to the audition and would hear: “Slate please” – I had no idea what they want, literally for the guy from Ukraine with English as his third language I had no idea what they were asking me, until like third or fourth audition when someone explained me it means to introduce yourself. I think some people just laughed at me that time but likely I stayed on my path and here I am talking to you as an award-winning actor. I had some really great experiences working with amazing individuals. I guess my most notable experience was studying with Larry Moss. I think I will remember it all my life. What a man he is, just wow. Dedication, ability to see you, empathy there is so many words. And I guess the other one was winning an award for best male performance at the film festival in Los Angeles. I star and helped produce short film called “Forever a Gentleman” and I would never expect what will come out of it but I guess if you do your best good things might come your way.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
That’s always a tough one. Either some historic figure (this one time I played Benito Mussolini in Dictator’s Playbook directed by Mark Stevenson) or someone like Joker, I have fun playing bad guys.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I work in Toronto as of the moment but of course always to open anywhere really. I want to do more theater. Just yesterday I was auditioning for a play so fingers crossed!
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
Hm…do I have to pick just one? Ok i got it. Do your best – always – just do your best! Do look at other people, circumstances etc. Come in give it all, leave. And you never know what will come back to you. Also take classes, learn as much as you can! I can recommend some great places like LB Acting Studio or if you are a foreigner and what to work on accents, Rae Ellen Bodie is amazing! And if you want to stay ready, check out The Actors Place that has drop-ins for $10 which can be really good if you are on a budget. It was started as actors gym by this multifaceted actor and host Ivan Wanis Ruiz; and it’s a great community to meet actors and work on your skills!

Why, What fuels your passion?
Ability to tell stories and be a part of helping people see and relate to things they haven’t before. This one time I was working on Chinese TV series for NTDtv and it was a fictional story about how Chinese government destroy people’s lives if they don’t agree with their policies. It was a fiction but then somewhere in the middle, I was like wow that’s actually happening right now in China and just to be a part of this was a great honor for me. I think people should have same rights regardless of where they are born, gender and how much wealth their parents have.
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
haha oh this is going to come back to me…I don’t know how to ride a bike.
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
Absolutely not! With this experience and knowledge I would definitely do things differently and more efficiently. Just as a guy from Ukraine I didn’t know what to do and where to go if you want to be actor. It took me a lot of time to figure out road maps. I don’t have any regrets, I don’t believe in them. I think what happened is done and all you can do is get the best out of it and make sure you learn from it. Also don’t forget to have some fun during as it is life and I’ve heard we only have one!

I had the opportunity to chat with actor, dancer and choreographer Jenna recently from Toronto.
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
I discovered my passion for performing at a young age. I was painfully shy as a kid, so overcoming my stage fright took work. I originally wanted to be a Musical Theatre performer, my favourite musical being Chicago, but soon found out that singing was not for me. My mom signed me up for dance, and acting classes and I loved them. Upon graduation from High School, I made the decision to focus my energy on dance, rather than acting. Now that I have graduated from college, however, I am swinging back into the acting side of the performance industry.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
When I started discussing my goals for my acting career, every single one of my friends was on board to help me out. They’re always willing to be a reader for my self-tapes, or to help me rehearse, give advice, and even drive my butt out to auditions! It’s much easier pursuing a career in a demanding industry when you have a great group of friends to help you every step of the way. The love and support I have experienced from them has definitely been a huge inspiration for me pursuing this career.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
Battling my self-doubt has been a huge challenge; one that I struggle with on a consistent basis. There are so many wonderful, talented actors in the industry, and I find myself constantly thinking, “Do I even have a shot? Everybody in this room is way more talented, and better looking than I am.” I just have to be vigilant in reminding myself that the only competition I have, is myself, and not to compare myself to others successes, or failures.
In regards to rewarding experiences, getting the opportunity to develop and “play with” a character makes this whole industry worth it. Being on set with a group of passionate and talented individuals, who are all in the zone with a singular goal in mind (to make great art) is a huge rush.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
I love playing characters who are manipulative, and a little on the bratty side. I recently got to play the lead in a Sheridan College film called “Michael Klein is Dead”, where my character Sydney Summers was a major manipulator. She was a blast to play! Working with the director and other lead actress to fully develop Sydney was such a rewarding experience.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I’m currently focusing my energy on acting on film. But I am also hoping to gain some more experience behind the camera, both in directing and writing. I would love to create my own content.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
It’s okay to suck, it takes time to hone any skill! I use to worry that if I ever had a terrible performance, it would mean that I was a terrible actor. It felt as if my credibility as an actor was hanging in the balance of one performance. I never realized I did this until an acting teacher called me out on it. I still struggle to stay out of that mindset, but when I stop worrying about the outcome, my performances are so much better for it. Also, not taking things personally. There are so many factors that are out of our control, it’s best just to move on to the next thing.
Why ,What fuels your passion?
The ability to have an impact on the audience. To be able to make them laugh, cry, and think is very powerful.
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
I am a proud Hufflepuff! I’m also developing a deep passion for baking, thanks to the baking shows I’ve recently been binge watching.
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
I sometimes daydream what my life would be like if I had focused on acting and dancing more intensely at a young age. However, I then remind myself that I might not have met all of the fabulous people in my life, if I had made different choices. My experiences have made me the person I am today.
I’ve recently booked a role on an upcoming pilot called Project Eidolon (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7719834/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_1). I’m super thrilled to be on board, and I can’t wait to begin filming this summer.

Rick is an actor working in Toronto. We had the chance to chat with him recently about his acting career and life.
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
As a kid, I was always the class clown in school and very animated. I learned early on that I could make people laugh and that was something I leaned on a lot. But at that time, 70’s / 80’s, living in Canada, the notion of becoming an actor seemed crazy. We certainly weren’t considered Hollywood North at that time.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
I guess, looking back, I was told over and over again, “you should be in show biz”, but I never took it seriously. In fact, a passage in my grade 8 yearbook was, “most likely to be: the next Steve Martin”. Even with so many people telling me I should be a performer, the idea of being able to chase that dream simply seemed unattainable and unrealistic. But in the end, many years later, I was the one who finally pushed myself to chase the dream. I found myself in a position where my kids were all grown up, living lives of their own and a new chapter had begun. I have to say though, my wife has always been a huge supporter of mine and without her blessing and encouragement, this new adventure would not have happened. She has always seen in me, something that even I didn’t see and for that, I am forever grateful.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
I grew up in Toronto, but now live in Peterborough Ontario, (about an hour and a half drive to TO, in good traffic). So the commute for auditions and gigs is definitely a challenge. Honestly I don’t mind the drive, but the cost is a big one and I’m continuously reminded each time I pull in to a gas station. However, the alternative would be to move to the city and the increase in daily expenses would surely surpass what I’m spending now. Not to mention my wife and I have a whole world of family, friends and a beautiful granddaughter here that we wouldn’t want to leave behind. Not to say that I wouldn’t live in California / Berlin / New Zealand, etc. for an extended period of time, if a big opportunity came up. That’s just part of the business and you have to understand and accept that possibility.

Vivek is an actor working out of Toronto, Canada. He recently completed work in a supporting role in his first independent feature film that will be released in 2019 and is in talks to co-produce and be the co-lead in 2 feature films shooting summer of 2018 and 2019.
We met up with Vivek recently to discuss acting and his career.
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
Growing up I had always dreamed of being an actor – so much so I spent more time day dreaming of winning an Oscar than I did listening to my Professor’s in University. Having said that, I never had the guts to chase my dream at that point and instead opted for the safe route in the world of business. Oddly enough, the idea of acting came back through a business I co-founded, as one of my business partners is a successful SAG actor. One thing led to another and here I am chasing my childhood dream many years later!
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
My parents are definitely an inspiration from the point of view they have shown me that amazing things can happen with the right attitude and by never giving up. Also, my business partner is a huge inspiration as he’s done it and been successful at it. He’s been a huge help in teaching me the ropes and instilling the need to keep on working to learn and improve on the craft.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
The biggest challenge has been the roller coaster ride it can be from one day to the other. In one instance, you can land a gig or get great feedback to the complete opposite at your next audition.
The most rewarding experience to date has been being cast as a co-lead in my first independent feature film. It was the first role I’ve had where I could take one character through a wide range of emotions as the script progressed. It also gave me the opportunity to work with some really talented people to improve on the craft and give me more confidence to take on more challenging material
What is your favourite type of character to play?
I love playing roles in the which you go through a wide range of emotions – from emotional disasters to feeling like they’re on top of the world as their character develops during the story. Its liberating of sorts to go back to different times in your personal journey and bring them to life on film.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I’ve been mainly working in Toronto of late, but have had a couple of roles in LA and am finalizing the details to shoot a feature film in the Netherlands over the summer. As far as other areas, I just want to be on a set, doesn’t matter where its located. If there’s a gig for me, I will find a way to be there.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
My biggest advice is probably to not let the fear of failure stop you from doing something you are passionate about. Enjoy the process of auditioning and receiving feedback – learn from everything you hear – the good and more importantly the bad. There is no guarantees that you will make it, but finding out if you can will be the best adventure you will ever have!
Why, What fuels your passion?
My kids fuel my passion . I always tell them if you can dream it, its possible and I want my actions to speak louder than words when its comes to teaching them this lesson. Plus, they get a sparkle in their eyes when they tell their friends and teachers that I’m on tv or in a movie. Its pretty hard not to be motivated when your kids seem to think you’re cool because of what you do!
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
I’m a single father to the 2 most beautiful baby girls in the world, and that’s my unbiased opinion!
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
There are times when I think it would have been better to have given acting a shot when I was younger. But I can’t really consider that a regret as the life experience I’ve had with the path I chose is what makes me who I am today – and because of those experiences, I am the actor I am today.
As far as success I’m proud of, I think I’m more just really enjoying the process of chasing this dream, with the end game not really being something I’m thinking of. I’m learning every day and meeting some really interesting people along the way, all the while being excited about what I’m doing. So from that point of view I think this has already been a success

Danny McIvor is a Director, Cinematographer, and a Writer. He is one busy fella in the industry!
We chatted with Danny recently.
As a child, did you always want to make movies and work in film and TV?
Born into a family of Writers and Artists Danny, age 12, one day came across a movie company on location in the small village of Caulfeild on Canada’s west coast, where he grew up. He watched in fascination as the magic of making a motion picture was unveiled before him.
“I sat on a small hill overlooking the set, skipping school for three days only going home at the end of the school day to check in then running back down to the set until dinner time. It was only when the school Principal called to find out if I was sick that my absence was discovered by my parents who were not pleased. But it was worth it because then and there I knew for sure what I wanted to do with my life”.
How long have you been directing?
I started Directing right out of the gate, when I began making movies as a kid. Back then I had to do it all, out of necessity- Writing, Directing, Cinematography & Editing. But when I started telling stories with a camera professionally working for CBC it was one job at a time and I concentrated on the Cinematography and Post Production. But when I left CBC and headed to South America as a Freelancer in the 1990’s I again found myself doing all three jobs, although rarely on the same project. It wasn’t until I was hired by CNN to open their South America News Bureau in Rio de Janeiro that I was once again Directing as well as Shooting and Editing- what turned out to be over 100 documentaries during my 10 year career with the network. But, my first love has always been fiction movies and I have spent the last twelve years Directing many projects, from feature films to shorts, music videos and advertising videos.
Who inspired you to pursue your goals?
My older brother Mike, upon seeing my nascent interest in making movies as a kid bought me a new state-of-the-art (for the time) Super 8mm camera. I no longer had to borrow the neighbour’s camera to make movies with the neighbourhood kids. Needless to say, I was hooked.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry?
The challenge for every Indie movie maker, especially in Canada, where there is little to no government support for up and coming filmmakers, is raising money. I have attempted to raise money many different ways over the years from crowd funding to private investment to taking out personal bank loans. After 29 movies it is still very difficult to fund movie projects, not just for me but for every Indie movie Producer and Director I know.
What has been your most rewarding experience?
My most rewarding experience was the production of my feature film THE TIME BETWEEN. A project I wrote, Directed and, to save money, also acted as Cinematographer and Editor. The old saying “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” was never more pertinent than when I made this movie.
What is your favourite type of film to direct?
I have worked in many genres but it seems I have a special flair for light comedy, especially physical comedy. As a Screenwriter black comedy and satire are my favorite genres.
What market do you currently work in?
I work in Toronto one of the world’s most saturated motion picture markets as far as production and technical people go. It was saturated even when I arrived from Vancouver in the early 80’s which is why after 10 years working in television for the CBC my real goal, to make fiction movies, still seemed nothing but a dream as I found getting in and getting the experience I needed was all but impossible. This is why, when I quit CBC to go freelance with my own equipment. I packed up and moved to Rio de Janiero Brazil, a huge movie market but still in need of new blood. It was there I began to work professionally on movies, documentaries. television shows and advertising getting the experience I needed to build a career more easily when I returned to Toronto after 10 years.
Are there other areas you would like to work?
I am primarily a Director and Cinematographer and I often edit the movies I shoot. So I get work in all these jobs which I find extremely rewarding. One skill informs the other making me better at all three.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the filming industry?
No matter what you want to do in movies, from Producing to Directing to Cinematography, knowing how to edit movies is a fundamental skill that informs all those other jobs and makes location shooting much easier and more streamlined. Editing is truly the heart and soul of making movies.
What fuels your passion?
I need to be creative. And seeing a story go from script to screen is, for me, the best thing in life.
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
I’ll never tell. Besides, if I did no one would believe it.
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same?
No. On the day I left high school I should have hopped on a bus to Los Angeles and done anything, any job to get my foot in the door of the motion picture business there. That’s the world capital of movie making and that’s where you want to be if you are in your late teens or early 20’s and serious about making this your career.
Do you have any regrets?
See the answer the last question above.
Successes that make you proud?
I grew up poor and being able to make a good living doing what I love is my proudest achievement.
Tell me about your current projects.
I have four scripts “on the launch pad” and as usual I am searching for funding. In the meantime I am shooting 4 short films in the Spring of 2018 as well doing a music video and a number of scenes for Actors through my new side business SCENE IT. My Production Company Miramac Productions also produces advertising videos. I also host a monthly networking event in Toronto for Indie movie makers and Actors which is connected to my Facebook group “THE TORONTO INDIE MOVIE SUPPORT GROUP.”

Paul is an actor and represented by Anderson Talent Management. He has been in commercials as well as TV and Film projects.
We chatted with Paul recently, read the Q and A below:
As a child, did you want to be an actor, or did it fall into place through other activities?
As a child , I never really thought about being an actor. I did grow up in an entertainment family. My father’s hobby was as a professional pantomime(lip sync) artist and my brother is a professional ventriloquist. I followed in my father’s footsteps and at age 9, created my own lip sync show under the name of Mr. Mimic. Our father was our agent and manager and often the three of us would be on the same bill with other performers. It was this experience that gave me the taste of live performing for others. I learned about professionalism and that it’s a “hurry up and wait” business. I learned how things worked back stage behind the scenes. I performed that for about 4 years and then continued to be a “roadie” for my father for a number of years during school on the weekends.
Who inspired you to follow your dream to pursue acting?
It wasn’t until grade twelve when I got involved in the theatre arts program and performed in our high school musical that I thought I would want to work in theatre all my life. I attended post secondary in theatre arts, and although it was more on the technical side. I enjoyed it and learned lots but missed the performance side. It wasn’t until 27 years later that I re-trained and I was fortunate enough to find representation with Anderson Talent.
What challenges have you faced in the entertainment industry? What has been your most rewarding experience?
Some of the challenges that I am faced with is auditioning with actors that have been performing since childhood. In the same token, there is a huge opportunity for my demographic as some of these performers have retired or become less busy. And in most cases have become great mentors within this industry with coaching, teaching etc.
My most rewarding experience is difficult to assess as I am grateful for all of the projects I have had an opportunity to work on. I did get to work on a film with my son so that was quite special.
What is your favourite type of character to play?
My favourite type of character to play is the bad guy! It’s so opposite to who I am in real life. It is fun to play. The truth is that I like the challenge of freeing myself up enough to play any character presented to me.
What market do you currently work in? Are there other areas you would like to work?
I primarily work out of the Toronto market in Film, Television, TV, Commercial, Commercial Print and Voice work. I’ve discovered there are so many branches on the entertainment tree that maybe someday I might get involved in scouting, casting,or executive producing. I love to paint and draw so who knows maybe special effects make-up!! Or scenic painting.
What advice would you give to someone new trying to make it in the acting industry?
I would like to think that actors are doing it because it is their passion, not for fame or fortune. You need to build up your skills and training first before you can even begin to seek representation or audition for roles. Even then when you get an agent, you need to be prepared to work harder than they do to brand yourself. Its a two-way streak. Take workshops, Improv classes, always be working on your craft. Write stories, make short films, anything to keep you involved. Treat it like a business, its show “business” not show up or show off. Treat all auditions the same you would a job interview. Have patience, even though your career may not be where you want it to be right now. When you complete an audition, forget about it afterwards. You will drive yourself unnecessary stress. Also don’t look for validation in your work.
What fuels your passion?
The whole process I find rewarding. I enjoy auditioning for different roles and different mediums, networking with fellow actors and industry personal. And if I am blessed to book a job, the complete production process and seeing the client happy with the final product.
What is something about you that most people would never guess?
Tough question!!… I don’t know… my older brother and sister were adopted. Growing up I was jealous of that and wanted to be adopted too!
If you were to do it all over again, would you do things exactly the same? Do you have any regrets? Successes that make you proud?
I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve learned so much, and I continue to learn and improve my craft whenever I can. I used to think that I should have found my passion earlier, but I realized that life gets in the way for the positive: Raising a family and running two successful franchises the last 23 years. I have surrounded myself with a great team whom I’m very proud of. This has allowed me to pursue my passion today. I’m very proud that I have tried my best to be a very generous and giving actor, not only to my fellow actors but to EVERYONE that is involved in a project or production. It truly is a team effort and the reality is that it’s the crew behind the scenes that makes us actors look good. They are the real stars!!
